Who are we?

We started at Easter 2009 with a small team of thirty ordinary Christian men, women and children of all ages and backgrounds, to form, what is regarded by St Thomas’ Church, as a local church plant on Paxcroft Mead, Trowbridge.

We had caught the vision for a church on the Mead which has been handed down over the past 10 years from Christians both at St Thomas’, as well as others in and around Trowbridge. Since then the Church has well and truly blossomed and we continue to attract more people into our community. It is our want to reach out and demonstrate God’s love by showing kindness and compassion to the community - and beyond, by being there for anyone and everyone.

Essentially though, we have been blessed with a vision to grow a vibrant church family with a whole hearted commitment to reaching the people of Paxcroft Mead with the Good News of Jesus Christ.

Leaders

The Kingfisher Church is under the overall leadership of Rev Allan Coutts, Vicar of
St Thomas’ Church, Trowbridge. Leaders on the ground are Alison and Mark Bennett.
Alison and Mark have lived on Paxcroft Mead for 5 years and have two daughters, Lydia and Abigail who both attend the Mead School. Alison has previously worked in HR management for Bowyers, Chippenham College and Nutricia and currently runs her own executive coaching business. Husband Mark is a Training Co-ordinator for Avonvale Training Ltd and co-ordinates the training of apprentices and adults in engineering across the West Country.

Prior to their arrival on the Mead, Mark and Alison worshipped at Southwick Baptist Church, where incidently, Mark’s family have worshipped for the last 300 years!! So it was a big step to ventur all the way across town to St Thomas’ and Paxcroft Mead, but they both felt a strong sense of God pushing them in that direction for a reason that wasn’t apparent at the time, but soon became clear when they took up the vision for a church plant and when Allan approached them to become leaders.

The Church will also be served by various lay persons and clergy.

Why Kingfisher Church?

The first prompting for this name came one day when Alison had a rare encounter with a kingfisher by the bridge over the stream that flows through Paxcroft Mead Centre. These beautiful birds are apparently more common along the River Biss which feeds the stream on Paxcroft; it is not usual for these shy birds to roam too far from their main territory, so it was indeed, a rare and awesome occasion that coincided with Alison happening to be there at that special moment. After that, it seemed wherever Alison went, she would come across an image of a kingfisher. She shared this with others from St Thomas’ and it rather caught their imagination.

The origin of ‘kingfisher’ is obscure; the term comes from ‘king’s fisher’ but why that name was applied is not known. However, members of the new community church know exactly why they should apply the term ‘king’s fisher’ to each and every one of them. Jesus – the King of Kings, instructed His disciples to go and fish – for men! And that is exactly what they aim to do. Hence their choice of name.

Mark 1: 17 ‘Come, follow me,’ Jesus said, ‘and I will make you fishers of men.’
What’s it all about?

Since Kingfisher Church is an offshoot of it’s mother church - St Thomas’- it will inevitably inherit some of her DNA, which is most certainly a good thing. However, the Anglican Church recognises that the established church needs to change if it is to reach more people on their terms. Recent years have witnessed a wave of fresh expressions, developing new ways of doing church.

The idea of new church styles - new ways of belonging - is something Kingfisher Church will explore in the weeks and months to come. We are keeping our profile options open so our identity will emerge as the church family develops and grows.

Ultimately, whatever is decided, our motivations and values won’t change. We want to build a dynamic Christian Community. We want to form an attractive and life changing church community. Our purpose is to make a difference in the community and to reach out to those in need.

Ours is an ethos of servant hearted leadership and high expectations of God and empowerment of people. Church is not about buildings and traditions, it is knowing God, loving people and reaching the lost, all in a context of community.
